An award-winning youth theater troupe with many performances under their belt celebrates 40 years since its formation.

Founded in 1982, the WOW Youth Musical Theater will mark a milestone by presenting Grease the Musical this week and a 40th anniversary compilation show.

From the first hour of performance in a school hall to a series of six shows of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Weymouth Pavilion, complete with flying car, WOW has continually pushed the limits to improve its productions.

This high level of production has been recognized in several regional awards. Over the past decade, WOW has been nominated for a dozen National Operatic and Dramatic Association awards and won half of them, including Best Southwest Youth Production.

Chairman Alan McKechan said, “WOW has developed the confidence, teamwork and talent of countless young people who have learned invaluable life skills and unforgettable experiences.

“Over the years many have chosen to go into the performing arts and many have been seen performing in West End shows including Grease, Back to the Future, Legally Blonde, Les Miserables, Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins, Phantom of the Opera and The Sound of Music.”

WOW’s revenue dropped drastically due to a canceled production of Shrek followed by no performance for over two years, but that didn’t dampen their morale.

Mr McKechan said: “Above all is the sheer joy it brings to our members, the thrill of once again entertaining live audiences and the positive impact on their well-being that comes from rehearsing with others who love the performing arts.”

Although it engages a professional creative team, the theater group is run by a small group of volunteer administrators and relies on the support of many others to stage a production.

Janet Stockley, who co-founded WOW with Pauline Wootten in 1982 and is now its chairman, said: “I am so proud that what we started has grown stronger and continues to give young talent in the Weymouth area so much. wonderful opportunities. , as well as many exciting and special times for all of us.

After Grease, the theater troupe will work on their November show which will continue to celebrate WOW’s 40th anniversary with a selection of the best previous WOW shows.

Grease is at Weymouth Pavilion from April 13-16 at 7pm each evening with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday April 16. Tickets are available from www.weymouthpavilion.com or 01035 783225.
