University of Nebraska Omaha Musical Theater Announces Summer Musical Theater Academy


OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska Omaha College of Communication, Fine Arts, and Media, The School of the Arts, and UNO Theater announce the first UNO Summer Musical Theater Academy 2022.

The SMTA is a new, tuition-free summer opportunity for high school artists and technical theater students in the Omaha metro area. The first Academy will meet from Monday, June 6 by Saturday July 3. All academy activities will take place on the UNO Dodge Campus at the Weber Fine Arts Building, the epicenter of the UNO School of Arts and Theater.

The Academy will produce, rehearse and perform fame the musical with a cast and crew of students in grades 9-12 (including incoming freshmen and senior graduates) selected by audition and application. This production is looking for an ethnically diverse group of artists who master musical styles ranging from classical to rap, as well as dance styles such as ballet, modern and hip-hop.

Besides rehearsing and playing fame the musicalthe Academy will offer training workshops, college credits, and opportunities to experience campus life.

fame the musical will be executed on friday july 1st and Saturday July 2 in the UNO Black Box Theater of the Weber Fine Arts Building. The cast of fame the musical will also perform at the opening gala of the new pavilion at the Gene Leahy Mall on Sunday July 3 at 8:30 p.m.

A creative team of professional teacher artists from the UNO Theater, the Omaha community and across the country have come together to train, lead and work with members of the academy.

This production of fame the musical will be directed by Seattle-based director, actor and educator Vincent J Orduna, with musical direction by Tyler Gruttemeyer and choreography by Domanic Brown. Both Guttemeyer and Brown are on the faculty at Omaha South High School. The show’s design team will be complemented by faculty members from the UNO Theater, with stage design by Jason Jamerson, costume design by Jocelyn Reed and lighting design by Rick Goble.

Based on the movie and TV series of the same name, fame the musical follows students from the High School of the Performing Arts in New York throughout their four-year course. We see them accepting life and relationships; we see those who persevere, who are resilient – ​​and those who are not.

Originally designed by David De Silva, fame the musical features a book by Jose Fernandez, lyrics by Jacques Levy and music by Steve Margoshes. This musical also features the Oscar-winning actor song “Fame”, written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore. fame the musical is produced by special arrangement with Music Theater International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

Founded by UN Musical Theater Instructor Hal France, SMTA began with discussions with officials from Omaha South High School and Omaha Public Schools. SMTA’s mission is to build strong community relationships for the benefit of young talent in the field of musical theatre.
