There is a real buzz surrounding the upcoming St Albans Musical Theater Company production.
Following the success of You can’t stop the beat and Back on stage earlier this year as part of the Roman Theater Open Air Festival, the award-winning SAMTC is delighted to bring The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Contest at the Abbey Theater.
Six awkward teens learn that winning (and losing) isn’t everything as they battle for the spelling championship of a lifetime.
This entertaining musical features a wild ride, as some highly intelligent misfits – and audience members, too – try to make their way to the championship.
The first time the show was presented in this region, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Contest won the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, with a quick wit and humor that will leave audiences in turmoil.
Rona Perretti (Nicola Martinus-Smith), a former Putnam County spelling champion herself, guides spellings and audience volunteers through the bee.
Nicolas says: “Spelling is one of my favorite shows and it is a real pleasure to share the stage with such a great company, to help bring this witty, hilarious and musically appetizing show to life! “
Vice Principal Douglas Panch (Matt Clothier) helps Rona lead the Bee, who returns after a five-year hiatus eager to redeem herself for past mistakes, along with “Comfort Advisor” Mitch Mahoney (Charlotte Gregory).
Competing in this year’s Bee are last year’s winner Chip Tolentino (Ruaridh MacPhee), William Barfee (Alex Handley) whose magic foot helps him spell, Olive Ostrovsky (Joanne Goddard), a shy girl with a love of words, Marcy Parks (Cate Brooks), the ultimate overachiever, Logainne Schwartz and Grubenierre (Kerry Lee), the youngest contender with strong political views, and Leaf Coneybear (Gareth Edwards), who makes it all up. his own clothes.
While candidly revealing hilarious and touching stories from their family life, the eclectic group weave their way through a series of words, hoping to never hear the overwhelming “ding” of the bell signaling a spelling error!
Logainne’s dad, Carl (Martin Scott), an extremely competitive dad, and mother Olive (Sarah Dunning), an often absent mom currently in an ashram in India also join the cast.
Director Elise Betts said, âI am so excited to be working with SAMTC on such a special show.
“It’s amazing to find the theater live again and to work with such a talented cast.”
Elise is joined in the creative team by Clive Ogden as musical director and Andrea Campusano as choreographer.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Contest takes place at the Abbey Theater from Tuesday, November 16 through Saturday, November 20, with evening performances at 7:45 p.m. and a morning Saturday at 2:30 p.m. On Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, there will be socially distant audience seats.
Tickets can be booked online at abbeytheatre.org.uk or via the ticket office 01727 857861.
SAMTC advises that certain themes of the show may not be suitable for a younger audience.
