‘Opera in the Park’ brings arias to Home Place Park – The Madison Record

MADISON – “Opera in the Park” will share a new kind of entertainment for Madison audiences at outdoor concerts.

Opera in the Park will be a free, family-friendly performance at the new Home Place Park in Madison at 100 Shorter St. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. on September 20.

Opera in the Park is truly a unique event here in Madison. Madison Visionary Partners or MVP is thrilled to partner with Opera Huntsville for this event,” said Melanie Thornton, Executive Director of MVP.

Collaborative partnerships are important to MVP’s success “as a not-for-profit organization. MVP is primarily focused on large community projects, but we are also committed to hosting events in Madison that enrich the quality of life here in our community,” Thornton said.

“When I met Opera Huntsville Artistic and General Director Erin Huelskamp Bohn this summer, we both agreed that a joint Madison event would not only introduce opera to new audiences, but it would be also a great community engagement driver – in line with both MVPs and Opera Huntsville missions,” Thornton said.

Performers will include Amanda Nelson and Dekendra Jackson, soprano; Josey Poppin, mezzo; Shane Kennedy, tenor; and Justin Colon, baritone. Accomplished pianist Christopher Powell will accompany the singers.

Music will include “Think of Me” and “Masquerade”, “Phantom of the Opera”, Andrew Lloyd Webber; “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”, “La Traviata”, Giuseppe Verdi; “Love is a rebellious bird” (Habanera), “Carmen”, Georges Bizet; “The birds in the arbor” and “Beautiful night, o night of love” (Barcarolle), “The tales of Hoffmann”, Jacques Offenbach; “I Could Have Danced All Night”, “My Fair Lady”, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe; “Make him my confession”, “Faust”, Charles Gounod; “Largo al factotum”, “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, Gioachino Rossini; “Before leaving these places”, “Faust”, Charles Gounod; and other productions.

Food trucks will visit Home Place Park so members of the public can purchase a delicious treat or dinner. As of today, the Get Loaded truck is confirmed and Zion Gourmet Popcorn will be selling exceptional snacks.

“We are very grateful for the support of our sponsors: The Avenue, Offices of Spenryn and Accurate Machine and Tool Corporation. With the support of these businesses, we are able to host free, family-friendly events in Madison for the whole community to enjoy,” Thornton said.

Parking will be available at Madison City Schools Stadium, a short walk from Home Place Park.

“Whether you’re new to opera or are a seasoned aficionado, audiences will enjoy the variety of performances at Opera Huntsville. Come early, bring a chair and enjoy a great evening at Home Place Park,” Thornton said. “Join us in celebrating the power of community connections through incredible performances, beautiful music and great food.”
