Nelson Youth Theater wraps up final rehearsals ahead of school vacation series Andrew Lloyd Weber Cats and disney Aladin Jr.
NYT Director Richard Carruthers said the shows looked “really spectacular” and encouraged people to come out and see them, especially since Cats had a short three day run.
Cats has two shows a day, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Wednesday through Friday this week. Aladin Jr also has two shows a day at 2pm and 7pm, Monday through Saturday next week.
Carruthers said Cats was “definitely a crowd pleaser”, with a great cast, unique choreography and “a lovely chorus of the cutest little kittens”.

Cats is one of the most successful shows in musical theater history, setting a record of 21 years in London theaters and 18 on Broadway.
Inspired by the poetry of TS Elliot, Cats tells the story of the annual gathering of the Jellicle cats, each trying to prove themselves worthy of climbing to the Heaviside layer, but the real magic of the show is in the music and the dancing.
Carruthers said Aladin Jr was shaping up to be a show that people “wouldn’t want to miss”, from the audience who enjoyed the previous shows at the Youth Theater in The Lion King and Moana to those who have never seen a performance of the Youth Theater before.
Aladin Jr is based on the 1992 Disney film and the 2014 Broadway adaptation, including many beloved songs from the Disney classic like “Arabian Nights” and “Friend Like Me”.
The story follows Aladdin, the unlucky “street rat” who finds a genie in a magic lamp, granting him three wishes – which he uses with great mishap to capture Princess Jasmine’s heart.
“Disney Aladdin … has a massive 80-strong cast, including some of Nelson’s strongest teenage actor-singer-dancers, ”he said.
“With magical pyrotechnics, huge costumes, incredibly quick costume changes and a really cool soundtrack, Aladin Jr is set to be the most spectacular Youth Theater show to date … this show will have [audiences] to the next level of entertainment.
