Musical theater composer Colleen Dauncey releases new single “gotaway”

On August 20, 2021, Canadian musical theater composer Colleen Dauncey released her latest indie-pop solo single “gotaway”, co-written with longtime lyrical collaborator Akiva Romer-Segal.

You might recognize Colleen & Akiva as the musical theater songwriter duo that has been called “The Next Powerful Canadian Musical Duo” by The Globe & Mail and “The Future of Canadian Musical Theater. By the Toronto Star. Together they wrote the score for the musical The Louder We Get, which premiered in New York at the 2017 NAMT Festival of New Musicals and at The Other Palace in London (UK). However, when all of their theatrical plans were suddenly postponed due to the pandemic, including the debut of their new musical GROW at the Grand Theater in London (ON), Colleen & Akiva took the opportunity to watch at the interior and write from their own experiences.

Colleen never wanted to be a solo artist, but after many years writing songs for other performers to sing on stage, the loneliness of the pandemic seems like the push she needed to find her own solo voice. After a devastating breakup during lockdown, she turned to the comfort and power of songwriting, and by the time she got to the other side of grief, she had written an entire EP – apart. equals dark and tumultuous and sparkling and upbeat. Colleen has also been able to build an incredibly supportive community through live interactive broadcasts and recently achieved partner status on the streaming platform Twitch.

Akiva has collaborated on several songs for Colleen’s upcoming EP, including the latest single “gotaway”. The irresistible combination of addictive melodies, refreshing and honest lyrics and glorious pop production will have you singing a jaunt (yes!) By the first chorus.

Colleen explains, “Like so many others, we were gutted when the theater industry closed due to the pandemic, and for a long time I didn’t know what to do with myself. But one day it all went wrong. clicked and I called Akiva and I said “I think I’m writing an EP, and you gotta help me finish it!” Getting out of pop music and building a solo career was a lot different from working in the theater and really took me out of my comfort zone, but the connections I made with my listeners really got me through the past year and there’s no going back now! This song, “gotaway”, is an upbeat summer jam about overcoming self-doubt and fighting the relationship sabotage instinct we think we can I don’t deserve. I’ve learned that life is too precious and too short not to tell each other how we really feel! “
