What made you want to sing and play?

I grew up going to see local productions with my mother, and I’ve always been in awe of artists. I dreamed of being on stage in front of a crowd, but I was also terribly shy. I think it was the idea of pretending to be someone you’re not that got me into acting. I was so anxious and awkward that I loved the idea of having a pre-planned conversation script and mapping out every step and movement. I felt secure in the consistency and reliability of performing in a show; know exactly what the next line is and how the scenario will play out. I discovered that I loved acting in a show as much as I loved watching a show. It was fun to be in the center of it all and I enjoyed the chaos of tech week, learning a new show and getting ready for performance weekends. The fun of playing is unlike any other.

How did it feel to be crowned Miss America 2022?

To be crowned Miss America 2022 is an incredible dream come true. Like
a Korean American, I am so grateful to have the opportunity to compete alongside so many brilliant,
talented women and I hope to live up to the legacy. It was an honor to represent the great
the state of Alaska and look forward to making a meaningful impact through my personal story and
social impact initiative on the national stage.

What were your musical influences?

I’ve always been a huge Kristin Chenoweth fan, as has my mother. As my interest in musical theater grew, I watched Broadway YouTube videos almost daily, favoring the Character Study series. I loved seeing performers backstage on Broadway discussing their roles and watching them prepare for shows. I dreamed of this life! I particularly liked Sutton Foster and his phenomenal belt, as well as Laura Osnes and Jeremy Jordan.

Have you ever participated in musicals? If yes, which ones?

I did Babes in Toyland, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Wizard of Oz, Grease, Guys and Dolls, West Side Story and Legally Blonde.

Do you have a favorite role in a series that you have played?

I really enjoyed playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. I felt such a strong connection to the character and understood the struggles she faced, feeling the need to prove herself to her male counterparts.
