During the COVID-19 pandemic, when Brock University taught entirely online, clubs also moved online. The Brock Musical Theater (BMT) was no exception to this rule. After their production of Free of any tie was canceled in 2020, they were unable to meet in person to produce a show in 2021. The club however adapted; instead of producing a musical as they did in previous years, they organized auditions and hosted virtual cabaret shows.
This year they are eager to produce a musical again. On October 5, they announced via Instagram that they would be producing Little woman, a play based on the novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott. You may be familiar with the title of the recent screen adaptation of the novel directed by Greta Gerwig which has won several academic awards.
The musical is written by Allan Knee and composed by Jason Howland. It has only 11 performers, which will allow the club to better adhere to COVID-19 precautions once in-person rehearsals become a possibility.
One of the reasons this piece was selected, according to club president Marcus Tranquilli, is because it offers more opportunities for women.
âWhile our past shows have been a lot of fun [â¦] they’ve always had a male-centric cast, âTranquilli said.
Little woman will break this trend for the club.
In accordance with COVID-19 regulations, rehearsals will be held online for the first semester, with a plan to move to in-person rehearsals in the winter. They will then perform the musical in a rented theater space and broadcast it live to the public to further rule out the possibility of the spread of COVID-19.
Applications for the Creative Team positions opened on October 8 and remained open until October 15.e. One of the roles that BMT always seeks to fill is that of director. The application process is done via Google Forms. There are several ways for students to get involved in this club, more information on this can be found on the BMT Instagram page, @BrockMusicalT.
âThe auditions will take place virtually, with potential cast members sending in a video of them singing a song of their choice,â Tranquilli said.
More specific information on the requirements for audition videos can be found on the club’s Instagram.
The club will organize several events throughout the year. Students who are interested in playing but are not Little woman, or who are not selected after the auditions, will still have the opportunity to perform with this club. All of the events for now will be virtual, but they hope to schedule in-person events next semester.
Anyone interested in watching Little Women can expect to see the virtual performance take place from March 24-27, 2022. Dates may change if anything happens, but that’s the plan for now.
