South African soprano Elza van den Heever has been named the winner of the 17th Opera News Awards. The 42-year-old singer will be celebrated, along with two other American singers, for her opera performance at the awards gala on April 3, 2022.
Elza – who is based in France and has dual South African / French nationality – took to social media on Tuesday evening to share the good news, saying: âI am delighted to be one of the recipients of the award. ‘Opera News Award this year with my wonderful colleagues (mezzo-soprano) Denyce Graves and (baritone) Quinn Kelsey! Thank you to the entire Opera News team for this incredible honor. Can’t wait to celebrate with everyone in April in New York !! â
The Black Tie Gala at the Plaza Hotel in New York City will mark the Metropolitan Opera Guild’s return to live and in-person events. Musical tributes by J’Nai Bridges and Piotr Beczala will be paid in honor of the recipients. The gala will also feature Nina Stemme and Christian Van Horn.
Opera News editor-in-chief Paul Driscoll said it gave Opera News and the Metropolitan Opera Guild “special joy to celebrate” the three laureates “whose talent, integrity and courage are sources of constant inspiration “.
D’Elza, who was born and raised in Johannesburg, Driscoll said:
âElza van den Heever’s performances are endowed with a brilliant and generous spirit and loaded with her formidable sense of adventure; his glorious soprano and fierce dramatic commitment galvanized audiences around the world. Born in South Africa and trained in the United States, van den Heever has now taken her rightful place in the great opera houses of the world. She started the current season with a triumphant return to the San Francisco Opera as Leonore by Beethoven and the coming months will see her in Berlin, New York and Paris bringing her unique interpretive magic to the music of Wagner, Handel and Richard Strauss.
