The Des Moines Metro Opera is hosting a panel discussion with Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Naomi André, Director Tazewell Thompson and Conductor Michael Ellis Ingram on the upcoming production of Porgy and Bess. During this event, panelists will share their views on the famous opera and discuss why it has been both loved and contested since its premiere in 1935. Other topics will include cultural representation and the marginalization of black communities. Additionally, the panel will provide perspective on the role of Porgy and Bess today and how it could help the opera community in its efforts to make the art form more inclusive. The event takes place on June 2 and is free to the public. Find a link to register below.
