Cammarata, an Off-Broadway producer and founder of CreateTheater, and Halpin, chair of the performing arts department at SUNY Cortland, went to college together and majored in theater years ago at the University of Syracuse theatre. “I can’t say enough about the BFA program in musical theater that Kevin has created at Cortland,” she said. “This is truly one of the best professional programs I have seen. This musical development partnership will give students a chance to understand how professional work is developed and give musical theater teams a professional home to hear their work. performed by a talented and committed student body.”

The new program will produce a staged reading each year, with submissions handled by CreateTheater and the final project selected by college faculty. It seeks new musicals in development with no production history, centered on the voices and perspectives of young people on current issues.

“I’m so excited to be working with my longtime friend and colleague, Cate Cammarata, to launch this exciting program,” said Halpin. “This is an exceptional opportunity for our students to become involved in the creation of a musical as active participants early in the process. I am also delighted to be able to provide the opportunity for new works and for new voices to begin their journey. Musical theater and the development of young performers has been the bulk of my life’s work. While we have had isolated opportunities to bring new musicals to life in the past, this targeted program is both a big step forward for our program and a personal dream come true.”

SUNY Cortland’s Musical Theater Department was recently named a “hidden gem” in an article that praised the College for its contemporary training standards, activities, and past performance.
